Let’s take a minute and reflect on what Martin Luther King meant when he talked about the content of character. This refers to the core ethical values of honesty and integrity, respecting others, taking responsibility for one’s actions, being fair and just, and being someone who promotes love and compassion in others. This blog “article” could be one of the most controversial I have written, and do you know why? Answer: BECAUSE, YOU DISAGREED AND WALKED AWAY.
I … ONE HUNDRED PERCENT … agree with the quote from the September 30, 2016 PSYCHOLOGY TODAY article. And do you know … there is a small group that disagrees with that quote? Yet, they are getting all the attention.
Here is the reason why they are getting all the attention … they are loud. Being loud is not the same as being correct / accurate.
So, here I go…
Just because you were a heterosexual Caucasian man in 1940 doesn’t mean you should have gotten the job. Just because you are a gay minority man in 2020 doesn’t mean you should have gotten the job.
That is becoming more and more the case. There is a small group of people who are re-educating our country to what Dr. King said so eloquently / courageously said on August 28, 1963
There is definitely a movement to “right a wrong.” Yet, it seems to fail the test: if the shoe was on the other foot.
It seems to be okay to have a law that says: California’s law mandates that by the end of 2019, public companies that have their executive base in California must have at least one woman on their boards. … Under California’s law, OSI would be required to have at least one woman on its board by the end of 2019, and at least three by the end of 2021. Nov 14, 2019
However, if there was a similar law that said, “For every three female teachers hired at an elementary school, a BIOLOGICAL male must be hired” ALL HELL WOULD BREAK LOOSE! And you know what … I would agree that law would be / is (was) UN-AMERICAN! Certainly disagrees with the PSYCHOLOGY TODAY quote.
Another “however,” if there was a similar law that said, “For every three female nurses hired at a hospital, a BIOLOGICAL male must be hired” Again … all hell would break loose. And again, I would agree that law would be / is (was) UN-AMERICAN! Certainly disagrees with the PSYCHOLOGY TODAY quote.
I am sad to see that people are getting / earning jobs, in part, because of their gentiles or their skin color. It was wrong prior to January 19, 2020 and it is wrong after January 19, 2020. Well, it is wrong if we wish to be the United States of America.
Be honest. Meet me at the definition by PSYCHOLOGY TODAY. Today’s America is rejecting the following Martin Luther King, Jr. quote: “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”
That quote doesn’t apply to all people, including the white male. Correct? Be honest. And the reason why, is the loud minority doesn’t believe in this quote.
Here is my stance, SPEAKING AS ONE OF TENS-OF-MILLIONS WHITE HETEROSEXUAL BIOLOGICAL MALES (and there will be hundreds-of-thousands who will disagree with me): I support Dr. King’s quote and it is time for the majority of us who do — to speak-up.
We are raising a generation who will not have a homecoming court because they don’t want to exclude people. Well, guess what? You choose to feel excluded. Yes. You do. In a sane world, no one is having a homecoming court in the hopes to exclude you. You have chosen to feel excluded. In Dr. King’s quote, I see your response feeling excluded or losing or not looking like the homecoming “King” or Homecoming “Queen” is OR IS NOT “taking responsibility for one’s actions” and I would have included, “feelings.”
We are raising a generation who will not have a valedictorian because we don’t want to pressure students to be “number one” or “make” the other students feel stupid. Well, guess what? You chose those classes that got ya stressed out to be number one. NO ONE (and if they did, they are awful human beings) put a “gun” (metaphorically speaking … CALM DOWN GUN CONTROL ADVOCATES) to your head and told you to take every DAMN Advanced Placement course (and that is a “racket”) so you can be valedictorian. And, in the same instance, no one told you to sit on your damn ass and do nothing! You chose to fail! You have chosen the courses that caused you stress or you chose to sit on your damn ass and do nothing. Again, in Dr. King’s quote as defined by PSYCHOLOGY TODAY, I see a “LACK” of “taking responsibility for one’s actions”
Let’s return to “fair and just” (as referred to the PSYCHOLOGY TODAY definition of “content of character”). Please. Fair and just to have laws that mandates gender equity? Interesting. So, that passes the test: If the shoe was on the other foot?
THEN…
Divorced men. Stop paying alimony. Hell. Divorced women. Stop paying alimony. But, most of the time in this “unjust” / “unfair” world, men are still paying more alimony than women.
Why does alimony exist any longer? I get child support. Really. I do. Our dad was DREADFUL in his child support! Child support is a real need and responsibility!
Alimony? In today’s time? Can’t have it both ways women. You want to be independent. I support child support, but when that child is eighteen and doesn’t need any medical assistance, welcome to the reality of the modern woman. Stop leaning on the man! Get a job. It’s time. It’s fair and just.
Supporting love and compassion of others should be the same as a “hug.” A hug is the only thing given and received at the same time.
We are raising a generation to believe to be a loving and compassionate person, you must give-up all the values you have learned from your faith / religion. Huh? What? Please. How loving and compassionate are you, when you want / demand to take that faith / religion away from a person? Again, you cannot have it both ways.
Check out the extremes of a “theocracy” or “communist” society. Both are bad alternatives to a “republic.”
Yes. There are parts in the Bible that are pretty strong against parts of our community. What do I do with those parts? I am not the “judge.” I love all people. The people I have a difficult time loving are the people who paint a wide brush over me because I am a white heterosexual Christian male! Ignorance is a shame.
I am not going to convert you. I have NO interest in that part of Christianity and those Christians who do … WHATEVER! They have a role to play. There are 300 million people in our nation. If they bother you, that is YOUR CHOICE!! Walk away. Not all Christians are laying down the hammer!
I admit. I have empathy for you folks who are annoyed by the Christians who attempt to convert you. You know why I have empathy for you? BECAUSE THE “SOCIAL JUSTICE WARRIORS” who attempt to convert me … annoy me.
On this MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. weekend, I believe in CONTENT OF CHARACTER.
I believe people should get a job because they can do the job, not because of their gentiles or skin color. You being a certain color or male / female / gender-whatever should no longer be an advantage (BUT WITH “RETRIBUTIVE JUSTICE” seems to be a “thang.”) Weird to see we still celebrate such things. Oh, well… eventually we won’t.
I believe people should be paid for the type of job it is. I am high school band director. I have NO PROBLEM with a teacher at a continuation high school or a school for “challenged students” (hope that didn’t offend anyone) who works less hours than I do earning THREE TO TEN TIMES MORE THAN ME. That is an incredibly difficult job and takes special people. Special people earn “special” salaries.
Just like I don’t mind dangerous jobs – PHYSICALLY – taken mostly by men making more money than less dangerous jobs! Studies show, still to this day, more of the “dangerous” jobs are taken by men. Every woman hired for the SAME DAMN JOB WITH THE SAME DAMN HOURS AT THE SAME DAMN COMANY is making to the penny the same wage… BECAUSE THAT IS THE LAW! Don’t let people fool ya.
I believe people OWN THEIR FEELINGS. You feel hurt because you didn’t win homecoming king? THAT IS YOUR CHOICE! Get over it. Pain is part of life. Maybe you need to ask yourself, “Why does losing homecoming king hurt so much?” “Why does having a homecoming king and queen hurt so much?” I hope you can figure it out that in life: you win some and you lose some. You feel hurt because that is your choice!
Get some stoicism in you, my friend. For example: “you have power over your mind – not outside events” … “Dwell on the beauty of life…” “The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts…” “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact…” We need to teach our children OWN YOUR FEELINGS! OWN YOUR EMOTIONS! Don’t give away your feelings / emotions to the jerk / the bully / the asshole!!
Good times / GREAT TIMES create soft people.
There is right and wrong in a civil society. Just as in music: there are right and wrong notes. When you hear wrong notes, the music bothers you! There is a reason for that!
And just like dynamics / lengths of notes in music: there are moments of “gray” in a civil society.
In the end people, there are 300 million people in this nation. There is ONE GOD. You get to have the choice to be offended by what I wrote, and you get the choice to agree with what I wrote.
I look at your chosen response to what I wrote (opinion) and I say,
“Our reaction to everything thing we hear and see is an opinion and a choice. After reading this article, you have the choice to walk away from me or to shake my hand / give me a hug and stay with me. I am not responsible for your choice. You are.”
I know I will get a hug from GOD and HE is with me … and … hopefully there will be one or two of the three hundred people in our nation who will give me a hug, let me be me, and …….. stay with me.
Thank you Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Retributive Justice (eegads – this is real?)…. Retributive justice is a theory of punishment that when an offender breaks the law, justice requires that he or she suffer in return. It also requires that the response to a crime is proportional to the offence. Prevention of future crimes or rehabilitation of the offender are other purposes of punishment. (this seems to be happening on a “social” level vs. “judicial” level in our nation)
